Module 1 Palpation & Perception

  • 206 Northeast 31st Avenue Portland, OR, 97232 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

“The ability of a skilled practitioner to switch from palpation/assessment to treatment and back again, seamlessly, marks out the truly skilled individual.” Leon Chaitow D.O.

Cultivating palpation skills is a lifetime practice. In this introductory module we will begin with examining  and practicing the attributes of a three dimensional listening touch. We will practice the Taoist art of doing without doing by cultivating a quiet mind and listening to what the body’s tissues tell us. We will let go of agendas while we are palpating, there will be time enough for interpretations and treatment plans later on. We will learn to distinguish the different sensations of tension, temperature, texture, hydration, tone, elasticity, emptiness, and inner rhythms to name but a few of the sensations we are capable of sensing. We will learn how to palpate through the layers of the body and into the different systems, from the superficial fascia all the way down to the kidneys, ureters, bones, nerves and blood vessels. Of course this will not happen in one day of training but as the Taoists say, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.”  Throughout the 8 module training we will grow our palpation skills, returning again and again to the varied systems of the body, turning new acquaintances into easily recognizable old friends.

Module 2 Support ~ Using Props and Positioning for Therapeutic Alignment and Ease

This hands-on module explores how the skillful use of physical supports—bolsters, pillows, balls—can enhance therapeutic effectiveness. By understanding how these props help bring the body into more optimal alignment, we create conditions that naturally “jump start” the body’s own capacity to reorganize - an insight shared by both Somatic and Taoist principles.

We will also focus on our own alignment and body mechanics as practitioners, cultivating a gentle, graduated, three-dimensional quality of touch. This approach refines access to deeper tissues while reducing strain for both practitioner and client. Using a listening touch, we will practice manual therapy techniques for the superficial tissues of the torso, neck, arms, and legs. Through guided practice, partner work, and the sharing of experiences, students will discover how support is not just physical but relational—an exchange that influences trust, calmness, and the ability to let go.

Module 3 Alignment

This module examines how the skeleton, joints, ligaments, tendons, and intrinsic muscles work together, using visual assessment and manual therapy to clarify their relationships. Students will be introduced to a supportive alignment model that draws from both Somatic and Taoist principles. This perspective highlights the role of tendon integrity and intrinsic muscle strength, with the skeleton organized concentrically over the center of each joint. It also encourages a functionally integrated alignment that remains fluid and adaptable to the demands of our environment.

Through demonstrations and partner practice, we will explore positional release techniques that help the joints settle into more ease. Emphasis will be placed on developing tactile sensitivity, recognizing subtle barriers, and using the manual therapy approach of induction to soften restrictions and balance tonicity.

Module 4 Respiration

We will explore the anatomy and mechanics of breathing and its interconnectedness with the autonomic nervous system, diaphragms, psoas muscles, and skin. Participants will learn to recognize the tension patterns and habits that interfere with a natural three dimensional breath. Through refined palpation, we’ll locate the holding patterns and learn techniques for releasing these tensions.

We will practice Somatic and Taoist breathing methods that help retrain the body to slow and lengthen the exhale, coordinate the thoracic and pelvic diaphragms, and breathe three-dimensionally—inviting Qi, or life-force energy, into every cell. These practices are known to stimulate the vagus nerve and activate the parasympathetic nervous system, supporting a slower heart rate, improved digestion, and deeper sleep. Together, we will explore the felt sense of unimpeded respiration: What does it feel like when the bones breathe, when the cells breathe, when the breath becomes so unobstructed that it seems to breathe itself?

Module 5 Tonicity

This module introduces the foundational principles of Gerda Alexander’s theory of tonicity, interwoven with Taoist principles of inner strength. We will examine how contemporary fitness culture’s focus on isolating and strengthening large superficial muscles often creates a kind of “militarization of the body”— prioritizing muscle bulk which in fact creates a form of armor at the expense of the intrinsic muscles and tendons that support stability, alignment, refined balance, and accurate proprioception. In contrast, we will explore experientially how the attainment of functional strength incorporates a grounded presence with a more compassionate way of inhabiting oneself and engaging with others.

Using refined palpation and visual movement analysis, students will learn practical methods for assessing variations in muscular and fascial tone throughout the body. Participants will practice skills for sensing gradations of tone, recognizing signs of hypo- or hyper-tonicity and practice indirect and direct techniques of soft tissue release. We will practice different techniques for releasing hyper-tonicity and energizing areas of hypo-tonicity. By the end of the day, students will have a grounded understanding of tonicity as a living, adaptable phenomenon—and will leave with tools they can apply in hands-on work, movement teaching, or personal practice.

Module 6 Rest

This module explores the art of rest through the practice of the petite pause, guiding participants to settle fully into the body and the present moment. Using a combination of verbal guidance and subtle palpation, participants will learn to sense and regenerate the deep motility rhythms of the body—the intrinsic, self-generated movements that sustain life and promote balance.

Through guided exploration, students will develop the ability to notice where habitual tension interrupts these rhythms and learn techniques to invite relaxation and ease without effort. The class emphasizes experiential learning, helping participants cultivate awareness of the body’s subtle motions, enhance sensitivity to touch, and support others—or themselves—in accessing a state of profound rest. By the end of the day, participants will leave with practical tools for integrating the petite pause into their therapeutic or personal practice, and a deeper appreciation of rest as an active, regenerative skill.

Module 7 Movement

This class introduces a unique understanding of the body’s natural movement, integrating insights from Taoist and Somatic perspectives. We begin by cultivating visual analysis skills, observing stationary balance, walking, bending, reaching, and other compound movements. Participants will study how compressive, torsional, rotational, and shearing forces—when lodged in tissues and joints—affect the quality of movement, and learn to recognize these patterns in themselves and others. We will also develop palpation skills and positional release techniques to address joint imbalances and encourage a stable range of motion, improving both movement efficiency and comfort.

We will explore Gerda Alexander’s theory of how the force of gravity is distributed through the body and how repousser/rebound through the skeleton and tissues balances tonicity. Going beyond existing models and paradigms of movement we will discover how this new perspective fosters greater grace, ease, and efficiency, while reducing wear and tear on joints and tissues. By the end of the session, students will gain practical skills for observing, understanding, and supporting movement that is both resilient and harmonious.

Module 8 Expression

This class invites participants to explore and cultivate expression through the integration of voice and movement. The day begins with hands-on practices, using palpation and manual therapy techniques to release tension in the jaw, throat, cranium, and face, creating a freer and more resonant voice. These preparatory techniques support a deeper connection between body, breath, and sound, allowing expression to flow with greater ease and authenticity.

Building on this foundation, we will integrate concepts from the broader eight-month training, exploring the many layered avenues of expression through art, song, and dance. Participants will experiment with combining movement and vocal improvisation, discovering how integrative embodiment can enhance presence, communication, and creativity. By the end of the day, students will leave with practical tools for unlocking expressive potentials.

Gravity and Levity: Moving with Ease

Tuesdays 10:30-12 noon PST (19h30 - 21h CET)  March 1, 8, 15 & 22

or Thursdays 4:30-6pm  March 3, 9, 17 & 24

This series is for exploring the many ways we can invite graceful movement into our lives. We begin by tuning into our skeletal structure to feel the support of our bones. An interesting thing happens when we direct our attention to the deeper support of the skeleton, the muscles immediately recognize that they don't have to stay contracted for an upright alignment. The effect is a more balanced tonicity; for those who feel too earthbound a lightness arises and for those who feel too ungrounded a sense of solidness and connection to the earth ensues.

After our bones are back in our embodied consciousness we can begin to play with gravity and levity. Think of the graceful basketball player who first drops down through every joint before pushing off from the ground for a slam-dunk. This power from the ground, also called repousser and ground reaction force is available for our every movement when we understand how to use it. At the end of every class we will practice how to use gravity, levity and momentum in everyday activities such as bending, reaching, walking and sitting.

Class size will be held to a maximum of 8 participants so everyone will have individual guidance.

Working to improve one's breathing often presents a conundrum; the more we 'try' to take deep full breaths the more stress we produce and the more stress we produce the more shallow we breathe. The secret to breathing well is in the 'not trying' via the exhale. We must empty ourselves to make space for a full rejuvenating breath and use the breath as an elixir for life.

Other benefits of pelvic organ massage include bringing this forgotten taboo region into embodied consciousness, increased vitality and improved hormonal balance. This course is appropriate both for massage therapists, acupuncturists and other health professionals. It is not necessary to have previous skills in Chi Nei Tsang massage to take this class.

Chi Nei Tsang Abdominal Massage Training

  • 1515 Southwest 5th Avenue 4th Floor, Portland OR 97201 (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Chi Nei Tsang (which means “internal organ energy massage”) was developed by the ancient Taoists for cleansing the internal organs of physical and emotional toxins. The abdomen, which is considered in Chinese medicine the energetic center of the body, can become overloaded and sluggish with environmental contaminants and unresolved emotions. When the organs become overloaded, symptoms such as poor digestion, irritable bowels, low energy and chronic pain can occur.

The principles of Chi Nei Tsang are based on the 5-Element theory of Chinese Medicine, which assigns each organ its own personality, energetic pattern and relationship to nature. With these understandings, the Chi Nei Tsang practitioner uses focused massage movements, breath awareness, sensory awareness and sounds to help release stagnant energy and return the organs to their optimal well-being.

Chi Nei Tsang helps to detoxify the organs, release traumas, improve digestion, stimulate energy flow and cultivate greater vitality and well-being throughout the body. It has been used to help correct postural imbalances, relieve chronic shoulder and back pain caused by visceral imbalances, harmonize emotions, help in the healing of fibroids and endometriosis and greatly ease the symptoms of IBS.

This course will give participants a solid foundation in Chi Nei Tsang massage, including the skills needed to begin using this modality with clients immediately. Topics will include the classical principles of Chi Nei Tsang, the anatomy and physiology of the internal organs, palpation skills and massage techniques for detoxifying and releasing tensions in the small intestine, large intestine, liver, gall bladder, stomach, spleen, pancreas and kidneys. Participants will also learn a self-care routine for themselves and their clients.
